Practical or sexy?
August 12th 2007 10:59
Lingerie has found its way into women's wardrobe for many years. What started off as a necessary piece of foundation clothing has since turned into a fashion item of today. Many women I know love lingerie – whether buying for themselves or receiving gifts of it, they list it as the ultimate guilty pleasure.
Even when there’s a recession, lingerie will continues to sell well...some women just need to buy lingerie. It doesn’t matter that there are only seven days in a week and you may only need enough lingerie for each day of the week, my friend Cat needs to buy new ones every other week. Not only does it have to be a matching set, it has to be lacy – French is preferable. “I love how lingerie makes me feel sexy, attractive and good.”
Sam on the other hand is a practical gal. While she enjoys the occasional lingerie piece, she prefers cotton seam-free bottoms and a plain simple t-shirt bra…and it doesn’t have to be color coordinated!
However, women aren’t the only ones indulging in lingerie. Joe for example loves buying lingerie (for the latest love of his life!). He likes seeing her in sexy provocative pieces and is generous, often splurging on luxury pieces from La Perla and the likes. “I still remember my first purchase. After working up the courage to walk into a lingerie store, I was greeted by a buxom store assistant… I had a hard time asking for a ‘B’ when I was staring at a ‘D’…!”
Nick on the other hand buys lingerie only for special occasions, and though his fiancée isn’t particularly into lingerie, it is his secret pleasure.
So, when it comes to lingerie, are you practical or sexy? How does lingerie turn you on?
Ladies, is lingerie shopping your guilty pleasure – why?
Men, do you enjoy giving gifts of lingerie – why? What are your lingerie-buying experiences?

I'm with Aimz here. Into comfort myself. Not much support in some of those you've pictured, and then again I just have that natural sex appeal, who need undies?
I must admit that some of it is absolutely lovely, and some men do like silky things, I know one who just loved a silky petticoat lying on the bed, with no promise of anything accompanying it.
Not such a wowser,
katyzzz....I'm sure you'll make many people happy.

I love lingerie. I just don't like lace.
I used to have a thing for La Perla and Victoria's Secret treasures back in my 20s and indulgent, impractical days...but I realised I can't stand the feel of lace against my skin. I like cotton and silk. In matching or coordinating colours.
Although not my guilty shopping pleasure (that's another i-shoe...), I'm a sucker for a lingerie sale!
I love the new seamless 'technology' (I hate VPL...shudder) in lingerie. So light and soft, they're part of you.
Also, Bonds create wonderful gems now! Gorgeous and comfortable cotton....and their styles are very sexy but black or fuschia satin or silk is also a 'favourite'.
My husband has bought me lingerie but he knows exactly what I like and so he buys for me...not for him. Just as well he likes what I like!
(...but ahhh...lingerie for solely romantic reasons, is a different thing...won't get into it on a public forum...)
I guess I just like shopping full stop and I like wearing vibrant colours on all layers. I like my lingerie practical and sexy.
Hope you're well Lara.

Movies and Life
My experiences with lingerie haven't been that great. Either I can't fit my boobs in the bras or the lace makes me itch, ending up in a red rash which isn't that sexy.
But funnily enough I was looking in a shop the other day to get myself some nice lingerie, but I couldn't find anything I liked. But I will.....

Cute post!
For me, I like a combination of comfort and sexiness, but comfort is probably more important, (my husband likes any lingerie except nanna knickers which I don't do anyway).
I'm with Dusk - there's always going to be some lingerie reserved for "special occasions". *giggle*
I can't stand lace in a bra, it's too itchy.
I love Simone Perele, because she makes beautiful, feminine, comfortable bras for women with larger bosoms.
I would have to say it's not my guilty pleasure, I'll always go for a shop.....but bra shopping is something I have to do with my Mum - she alone understands how annoying it can be, and is OK with running backwards and forwards from the floor stock to the change room!
Cheers

For me, it's a matter of comfort all the way... I'm not a lace girl either and I couldn't care less if it is considered sexy or not... I've never had any complaints mind *lol* although I have raised eyebrows sometimes with my combinations *chuckle* ...
...comfort matters, so I guess that would put me in the practical column, although not necessarily ruling out the sexy side either?

Flashes of memories
I have only been introduced to the wonderful world of lingerie in the past few years - the town I grew up in did not really have a wide variety of stores and lingerie was definitely not something you would find in any of them.
Do I like it? Yeah, as long as it`s not lacy..... not really into lacy stuff. The silky stuff? hell yeah! I reckon it should feel as sexy as it looks.
As for when to wear it - well I normally dress for comfort so sexy lingerie would generally be reserved for... those sexy moments. Day to day I like the seamless underwear... it feels like your second skin!

I'm well, Dusk. Just kinda short of time to *play* these days. Thanks for asking
I absolutely can relate to what u mean, Tracy. I actually get frustrated when shopping for lingerie/undergarments. I wished we could design our own...right down to choosing the kind of material we want...

Thanks, CC -- good to see u.
Yes, Simone Perle's range is very pretty. I hear you re. bra shopping -- it can be truly annoying and frustrating. There were a couple of times, I left the store empty handed 'cos by the end of all that trying...my body (and mind!) was confused over which was comfortable and looked good!

Mmm, wearing the right kind of lingerie/underwear can definitely affect the mood, huh, Kylie. It is a lovely feel-good feeling -- I've heard enough times from Cat! The only type of lingerie I'd venture into is probably nightwear...
Yep, the technology behind those seamless underwear of today is amazing, eh, Ash. It's so practical and yet sexy at the same time -- I love it too! Silky stuff...for me that's reserved for bedtime...or is it playtime <giggle>

I think you're the first orbler whose blog address I've memorised.
I personally don't care if a girl wears lingerie or not; my ex, though, always wanted to wear it on special occasions.

I don't know if I can contribute anything to this post, having read the comments by female Orble lingerie addicts. (Busy taking notes btw).
I guess I'm only romantic in my mind.
As much as I like the whole notion and concept of designer-wear, Hollywood-style foreplay, when it comes to a practical situation (where I'm confronted with a woman)? I turn all animalistically-blokey, and only concern myself with what's beneath the lingerie.
If she's more concerned about how much it costs to replace a pair of shredded briefs and bras (and exterior clothing), she's probably not the woman for me.
It's a pity really. Maybe I should try and create a celluloid mood? Carry a ghetto blaster around on my shoulders downloaded with romantic love songs, and bring along a Dolphin torch to get the lighting and music just right. Do the metrosexual thing? Pretend I'm really into female's lingerie? Dance with her? Let her dance by herself while I cook a nouvelle cuisine meal for her while I say things like, "I love your taste in lingerie. And prefer extended foreplay"? Then show her my undies?
I don't think so. I'll stick to feral chicks who don't wear undies and put out, or just keep cross dressing and surfing how to have a sex-change websites?

I think it's great to have a couple of gentlemen's views on this topic, David

Deano...thanks for sharing. I've heard of couples playing dress-ups for each other. Intimacy in a relationship is after all one of the most important factors to a happy one. Continue to have fun
