Black white gray question discussion nurturing instinct

It seems that wanting to have children or having had children means you have a nurturing instinct, and if you don’t have children or don’t care to have children means you don’t have a nurturing instinct – this according to a couple of our friends, who are mums…of course...

Sure, there is a correlation between being nurturing and the motivation to want to reproduce. Surely there is also a correlation between nurturing and numerous other actions and roles – teaching, fostering animals or children, being a nurse, being a sister/wife…brother/husband, having pets, and the like.

After all, isn’t even caring for another or sharing with one another an act of nurturing…a nurturing instinct? ...or are we that *narrow minded* to assume that there is only the one paradigm (motherhood)?

It's not like I don't have a nurturing instinct (otherwise I wouldn't have had pets too) - but I just know my priorities.

Some 'mum's complain they never get to travel.
Well - they had a choice!

There's no question in my mind that nurturing encompasses a lot more than producing offspring!

I am taking a leap into the nurturing pond myself...

I am going to try to grow a plant. It may end badly.

It sure is a choice, Amy

Just don't be ramming your choice down my throat

<lol> I'm sure the plant will blossom under your nurturing, Michaelie.

So, *well meaning* mums, I guess we aren't over-reacting to your statement...

Eek, some mums can be so self-righteous and scathing when it comes to these things. You can have children and not be particularly nurturing and you may not have children and have a strong nurturing soul. Blurghh to those global aspersions.

Good luck with your plantation, Mich. I just killed one through utter neglect.

Well you are nurturing a couple of things that are more important, Trace!

It's still alive, kind of.
