Can you fall out of love as you fall in love?

Watching Roberto Benigni’s character in ‘La Tigre e la Neve (The Tiger and the Snow)' got me wondering if that was what being in love is…do we do what we do for the other person without a qualm?
Benigni’s character braved war-torn Iraq to save the love-and-desire-of-his-life; the irony is that it was not reciprocated…but how it ends (and the actual story behind it) may even turn the cynics into part-romantics. I will not spoil the movie for you, but if you can (very) patiently sit through Benigni’s theatrics, fumbling buffoonery and a rather snail-paced storyline…it’s surely a movie for the die-hard romantics. It is perhaps a message to help us remember why we sometimes do the things we do for the person we love, as well as what we do not do to hurt the other…
I am a romantic at heart…I love the heady feeling one gets just by looking at each other or cuddling with each other. I love how one can feel such strong emotions for another, and can willingly do something with no qualms. I love how cooking dinner (and even washing-up after!) together is romantic.
Many of us have a romantic notion of what falling in love or being in love should be, and how it should feel. Is it really trimmed with colourful sprinkles and sweet icing, or does the sprinkles fall-off and the icing melt-away the moment a couple is hit with a crisis, get separated or get divorced? Do we really stop loving that person we so loved, or is real love undying…regardless?
