Love is floating around the cyberspace

There seems to be a lot of people meeting their potential and future partners from the Internet over the past couple of years. I guess this phenomenon is happening thanks to the rise of the new age generation, where people rely heavily on computers....from getting their tasks done....to socializing and meeting people....and surprise surprise....even baby boomers are catching up on this trend!!!
So, the question here is how real can online relationships get? Oh, you know, the ones that blossoms out from those endless heart-racing conversations that 2 people share over internet chatrooms and instant messengers (think, MSN & Yahoo! Messenger). And so, boy and girl logs on with their online nicknames (names like ShopGaL23 or LoverBoy2U, get the picture?). Boy chats girl up, they both spend endless nights (and days) chatting over the Internet and *BAM* - a ‘relationship’ begins!
Well, call it the unconventional method of dating and meeting people if you wish, but here are my 2 cents on this issue. Firstly, YES it’s as real as it gets – 2 people sharing meaningful conversations and somehow they express themselves more freely than they would in real life (remember, they can’t see each other, so that’s one burden off!). And from there, they get to know each other better and feelings grow deeper until both parties think that they feel a connection. Oh, and did I mention that since they can’t see each other, they think that the other person is actually liking (or, loving) them for who they really are (minus the physical attraction – big eyes, huge biceps)? And so it drags on and on until *gasp*, they realize that they’re soul mates who were destined to be with each other all their lives!
So, let’s snap back to reality here, shall we? Sorry to burst your bubble, but there’s no physical contact and/or interaction here, mate! And yes, it matters because most people portray themselves differently in the virtual world compared to real life! And….keep this in mind – people always lie (think, child pedophiles and wrinkly sex maniacs). Yeah, it really is that bad! In fact, it’s almost as if you’re having an imaginary lover (similar to imaginary friends that kids make up). Ok, maybe a tad better than that, but still you can’t see or touch them, can you?
Right. Now that I’ve made my point(s), I’ll conclude this entry with a piece of advice. Nobody’s stopping anybody from developing relationships online and bringing them to real life. Just be aware of the negative sides of these, and keep an open mind that things might not turn out to be rosy after all (in other words, don’t keep your hopes too high!). So, ladies (and gents), spare yourself the hurt and possible embarrassment – just be AWARE and be SMART. As the saying goes…”If it’s meant to be yours, things will happen at the right place and time!”
Till then, be safe and stay out of trouble.
Cheers!
