…an array of perspectives and random thoughts on love...loveS and life...

Tragic, passionate, soppy or...? What's your flick?

movies romance affairs dates

Somewhere in time, a producer somewhere decided that there was money to be made in movies…specifically on love and romance, some known as chick flicks but some known as real classics. Whatever it is, it pulls at the heartstrings. Whether we can find romance in real life or not (it doesn’t quite matter), we can always count on finding one on the reel – whether it’s tragic, passionate or warm and fuzzy…it’ll be there!

Here are (just) some of my favourites, in no particular order:

Love Actually
A wonderful weave of stories on the different types of love and romance that we can encounter throughout our lives, particularly in this chaotic and ever changing world of ours. I love the soundtrack -- especially the ‘Love Theme’ by Craig Armstrong, and my favourite story – though bittersweet – is the one where Keira Knightley’s character mistakes the distance of her husband’s best friend for something that it’s not…and then *the visit* with the message on the placard <happy sigh…>

Romeo&Juliet (Baz Lurhman’s)
One of my favourite Shakespeare play about a pair of “star-crossed lovers”, radically modernised for the big screen by Baz Luhrmann. I love the sets and costumes, and though critics cringed at it, I love how the characters were further illustrated with different symbols – e.g. Tybalt wearing devil’s horns, Juliet in angel wings - so clever I thought!

An Affair to Remember
A classic! Love the pact to meet at the top of the Empire State Building – a refreshing perspective on waiting and thinking-through the possibility of a (successful) relationship, and Deborah Kerr’s portrayal of a confident and discerning woman. Perhaps something we can learn for this modern life of ours…

In the Mood for Love
A story of love and romance spurred on by the change-of-heart in the lovers’ respective spouses. A test of marriage vows vs passion and desire. Comprising of a haunting music score, interesting and artistic camera angles by Australia’s Christopher Doyle, and exquisitely crafted Chinese dresses/cheongsams.

Cinema Paradiso
A story about the many levels of love one can experience, accompanied by an exceptional and enchanting music score by Ennio Morricone. It starts off with a boy’s love for films and the cinema, and follows him (as he becomes a man) through a roller-coaster of infatuation and euphoria to a missed opportunity because of life’s unexpected twists and turns. Shows us the many levels of love -- as a person, as a parent, as a child, as a community ...a few messages in there. The Director’s cut has a better ending, a nice closure that ‘Salvatore’ needed…

There you go, a few movie ideas for a date, a girls' nite or a night on your own...

What’s your favourite movie on love and romance…or do you have a few?

About Lily's comment - yes, everyone seems to love the Notebook.

I watched WICKER PARK the other night... I really enjoyed it. I also like A Lot Like Love.

Thank you for visiting my blog - I hope you enjoyed it, and will continue to enjoy it! There are a few romantic entries there. Have you watched Paris Je T'aime yet? It's full of romantic stories. I liked the Natalie Portman story and the story with the woman who visited Paris on her own.

Uh oh.... not only have I not seen any of the movies mentioned, but I also don't really have a favorite movie in the love/romance category. I love romantic comedies, but none jumps out as a favorite... with the exception, perhaps, of The Lake House (not a comedy, though)... it had the metaphysical twist I enjoy so much. I also liked Pretty Woman... But, I'm with movies like I am with music... and I'm a musical dwarf. I don't do movies often, and when I do, it's usually something the kids want to see, not something of my own choosing (not that I didn't love Harry Potter and Eragon, but....*smirks*).

Hi Lara,

This is an interesting question, because I love movies and because I have teenage daughters..romance movies are big on the scene at our "girls movie nights"...

Many titles there in this category of teenage love stories, but perhaps the one's we have watched the most often (for me) were:

10 Things I Hate About You,
The Wedding Planner,
Just My Luck,
Suddenly 30
The Little Mermaid
She's The Man
Princess Bride
Ella Enchanted
Shrek

For me personally?

Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. (stands out as one of the best dating films ever)
Pride and Prejudice (any version)
Chocolat
French Kiss,
Anna & The King (With Jodie Foster and Chow Yun Phat)
The Man From Snowy River

Must Love Dogs
Surrendipity
Kate and Leopold
Addicted To Love
Sleepless In Seatle

Adventure Romance :

Pirates of the Carribbean
Pay Check
5th Element
Timeline
Romancing The Stone
Indianna Jones

Classics:

Romeo and Juliet
Trsitan and Isolde
MId Summer Nights Dream
Shakespear In Love
AN Affair to Remember
Cat on a Hot Tim Roof
Cleopatra and Anthony
King Arthur
Troy

A timely post. I shall go and watch them again now I'm on bed rest for a week.

Lily - Thanks for the recommendation

katyzzz - Yes, an affair to remember is a real classic isn't it?

Dean - I liked 'Wicker Park' too! Thanks for suggesting 'A Lot Like Love' and 'Paris Je T'aime', I'll have to get 'em out. I heard mixed reviews of the latter, but I think I'll judge it myself

Wendi - 'Pretty Woman' I think is one of those *classic* girly movies - I don't think it'll go out of style I LOVE 'Harry Potter' movies and books!

Nina - Thanks for popping in.

John - What a great list! I've only watched 1/3 of what u listed, will have to watch the rest soon.

David - Fantastic list! I'll check-out Il Postino.

Lilla - Would u believe it? I've watched every movie you've listed! ...and I agree a few of the classics are worth watching again. If u enjoyed 'Under the Tuscan Sun,' I think you'd also like 'My House in Umbria' - a beautiful story and 'A Good Year'.

Lara, *waving at Ash*

I’d forgotten Jane Eyre and You’ve Got Mail, I loved A Walk in the Clouds too and Man in the Moon, The English Patient…wow there really are so many good ones in your list Ash.

I just loved Hope Springs too and one of my favourite favourites is Jodie Foster and Mathew Mac in Contact (that’s probably one of the best films ever made in all aspects for me anyway)…

Recently I really liked the Holiday too...

Do you know I woke up during the night with all these titles running through my head… you’ve really got me thinking now Lara *chuckle*

I'm now challenging myself to just pick one as the absolute favourite ...*lol*

Great Post, indeed!
