A Good Idea; Determination and Lots of Luck

The idea was good...
Five hundred and twenty four recipes later, she got a book deal – and since then a movie has been made about it.
I really enjoyed “Julie & Julia”, the movie. It is entertaining and humorous, and it shows the funny and exasperating side of blogging, which no one would understand – unless they were a blogger, of course. It also of course shows the wild enthusiasm of a passionate home cook.
“Julie & Julia”, the book is however the opposite of how I feel about the movie. It is somewhat entertaining but it soon borders on being a very painful read. While Julie Powell has some really good witty lines, and can illustrate a good image, it is this exact wittiness that turns too cathartic.
The digressions from the main idea of the book, (about making through the 524 recipes in 265 days…or am I wrong) is far too many. I get that you might want to inject personality and real life into the book besides just cooking and making it seem like a cookbook; but constantly jumping from political leanings to complaints about her (poor) husband to the secret lives of her best friends just becomes too prime time soap opera-ish (for me).
What I do love about Julie is that, she took a (simple) idea and turned it into something big. I’m not sure how much of it was planned but kudos to her for her determination. It shows that no idea is too small…too boring…too done…too *whatever*. To succeed, you must first try and persevere (to your heart’s content) before you can call it quits.
Someone once said, “If one has determination, then things will get done.”
I'll be ticking lots off my list from hereon. What about you?
