Is Cosmetic Surgery that Dissimilar to Non-surgical Cosmetics?

Apart from the obvious that one requires you to get a doctor’s help and go under the knife, and the other you can pretty much get it off the shelf (so to speak), is it that different?

This was the *debate* among a few friends recently.

Jemma commented that a colleague (who recently had breast augmentation) did it to further entice the male population, and further commented that she probably lacks confidence in herself to actually find a man without her enhanced breasts.

Elise: “Why do you say that?

Jemma: “Otherwise why would anyone spend all that money if it’s not to gain more attention unto themselves.”

Cat: “Maybe it’s a feel-good feeling rather than just wanting more attention. Also, some do it as they do need that extra *help* – like that girl from ‘Destiny’s Child’ (story here).

Jemma: “Nah, she just lacks confidence in herself, and got it to boost her ego and get herself a man…or some men!”

Pia: “Well, what about you…you spend a couple of thousand every month getting your hair coloured, teeth whitened, and skin tanned (despite warnings about using tanning beds!). How is that different??”

Jemma: “It just is different. People who get cosmetic surgery are unsure of themselves and want to change the way they look. They just don’t have the confidence in themselves to be comfortable in their own skin.”

Me (Lara): “Hah…and that’s coming from someone who’s considering botox! And won’t be caught dead without a tanning session nor dare miss a hairdresser’s appointment!”

Cat to Jemma: “Right, so you do feel good and more confident about your appearance after all those beautification sessions, right?”

Jemma: “Of course I do, but it’s different (to her) having cosmetic surgery.

Elise to Jemma: “I think you’re just jealous…”

Both cosmetic surgery and non-surgical cosmetics cosmetics aim to enhance a person’s appearance – for whatever reasons.

I think the two are similar. Of course, cosmetic surgery is a more drastic measure than the other, and perhaps less socially *acceptable* as a means of beautification…but at the end of the day, the results (surgical and non-surgical cosmetics) are to enhance/beautify a person’s appearance.

I don't believe in plastic surgery for cosmetic reasons, learn to love yourself as you are, and others will too. Half the time they don't even notice.

Looking at your picture there makes me glad I keep my face covered up.

Love the thistle.

Lara, both have a similar purpose : making you look and feel good about yourselves and getting occasional compliments. The only difference is that non-surgical cosmetics are temporary and you can always take them off at the end of the day, no fooling your lover when the mask comes off (still remember a hilarious memory of a friend of mine taking off her push-up bra and her then-bf going, "Hey, I thought your breasts were huge!"). And your friend Jemma's wrong. A person who undergoes cosmetic surgery isn't necessarily more insecure than a person who only splurges on cosmetics.

Aimz - great example re: the push up bra and makeup.

Lara - I agree with you about this for sure. And I think non surgical procedures can be used to boost self-esteem or done for the benefit of others just as surgical procedures may be done simply for that person to feel more confident and comfortable in themselves.

Of course, as you say, it is more drastic - but I also think that constant tanning and botox, lasering, bleaching, etc can be about as bad.

That said - I am still addicted to cosmetics and various beauty procedures, and as for the knife... never say never...

Hopeless.

Good advice, katyzzz. Nothing wrong with your face, dear...as beautiful as ever...

Thanks Aimz.
Yea, I think Jemma's view is slightly convoluted. The few of us felt that she was slightly hypocritical -- to dis her colleague even though she herself is at the *mercy* of beautification aids...!

A person who undergoes cosmetic surgery isn't necessarily more insecure than a person who only splurges on cosmetics.
...absolutely!

Agree with you, Mich - that for whatever reasons, cosmetics (surgical or non) if it makes a person feels good or provides that extra confidence so be it Yep, I think the lot of bleaching, tanning is as bad as well...!

Hi Lara,

you pose a great question. My short answer would be no different at all.

You know me I am all eu naturale in my approach to beauty, but I have seen face peels that do more than surgery would... some horrible things...yuk!

Of course I am not talking boob augmentation and that stuff... that is way more drastic and perhaps a psychiatrist would be better suited to the job than a plastic surgeon... ((laughs)) but that's just me getting picky, sorry.

Great post,

Lilla ...
