What kind of friend...?
June 28th 2007 00:55
Friends... the extension of one's family. The all important link to social networks for one's sanity -- weaving one into the social fabric so that one is considered *normal* as one has friends, because otherwise...one is a recluse or even a social outcast.
I have close friends and good friends. My close friends are the ones I know I can always count on no matter what. We talk about everything and anything, and can be a 101% honest with each other without her/him getting angry or upset at what I said (and vice versa!). It's to a certain extent an unconditional love or relationship that we have with each other... a connection that can't be broken, even through the most testing of times... it's the kind of relationship that picks up naturally from where it was left off.
Now good friends are slightly different I feel. These are the kind of relationships that have yet to mature to a state where you can pour your heart out (without them thinking you're mental!)... and vice versa. They are however, good enough friends for me to consider going on a holiday with... but perhaps not ones I'd plan a holiday with. It's the kind of friends that I'll make an effort to see, but I won't quite go out of my way to... well sometimes I do...
So what about friends? Well, I consider them as acquaintances... someone whom I'm on good terms with, and not necessarily miss if I don't see them. These are the people whom I socially engage with... and not much else. In fact, they probably don't even know how many siblings I have or what I love...
Close friends, good friends, friends... Friends are friends, or are they not? Do we *classify* them or do we merely call them all friends?
p/s... I like my friends, but I love my close friends...

Friends have been my lifesavers when my family has quit on me, but I have lost some friends. through death, very sad, and others have abandoned friendships over 20 years long.
I would always do whatever I could to keep a friend but when they don't want you, they don't want you. I have never done to some people what they have done to me. My way is to just stay away for a while if things aren't going well and generally things sort themselves out.
Lovely, thoughtful post.

Yea, my close friends are fantastic...and I know I can count on 'em whenever, and perhaps a few more than others but they'll all still try...
Well, when friends get *funny*... the way I see it, I don't think they were *real* friends to begin with...
Thanks for your thoughts!

Yea... I guess at the end of the day, close friends are the ones that will help each other out no matter what, well... they will at least try. The older I get, the more apparent it becomes that I only really need a handful of good...close friends -- the ones I can really count on.
Happy weekend

hmmm...interesting post Lara ! thought-provoking...i believe close friends have an everlasting bond whether or not we meet during the course of time...when we do meet, our bond remains...whereas for good friends, we hang out, do stuff..chill..yet the bond has not been established yet like i have with my close friends..
