Desire...wonderful or haunting?

Desire…a craving, a longing, a wish... A strong word that’s oozing with emotion, and the name of songs by Bob Dylan, U2, Geri Halliwell – just to name a few. It is also the title of an appropriately named film starring Marlene Dietrich and Gary Cooper, and it’s a word that we’re familiar with and perhaps often used to describe our deepest feeling for something or someone.
Hmmm…how many have I had – too many to recall…or perhaps too insignificant to remember. My latest desire? ...lazing on a white sand beach with a cocktail in my hand, a good book in my other hand…and the hottest man beside me – which of course can be the love-of-my-life.
In another town, my good friend Eta desires her neighbour. Sure he’s good-looking, has a fantastic career and a great personality to boast. He is also currently the man-about-town (after having just broken up with his girlfriend of 2 years). Eta, well she wants to be in a long-term relationship, and although it doesn’t seem like her neighbour has the same plans – they’ve just started dating with no strings attached.
Lina, in another part of the world, has just given up her career at a top firm to marry the man she’s totally in love with. To some it was a waste to give up her career just when she was almost at the top rung; to others that was the power of love…a wish to be married to a wonderful man answered.
Why is ‘desire’ more complex than we think/feel? Does desire cloud our better judgment or does desire help nudge us along…giving us hope?
