Dating Turn-offs

March 17th 2008 05:23
green-face turn-off disgust annoyance

Dating can fuel a bunch of emotions – from the positive feelings of happy, anxious and excitement to feelings of disgust and annoyance.

Whatever it is dating can be fun, and seems like a natural occurrence among the human species. Having said that, there have probably been occasions when you wonder why you bothered. Can it be that bad? Maybe, we should just stay home with a good glass of wine (or cocktail) and a good book…?

stack of red red books

According to some of my friends (and their friends), some dating turn-offs are:
- Date being late
- Date too self-important – i.e just talking about himself/herself, looking at his/her reflection more times than you can complete a sentence!
- Date asking me to pay
- Date with bad breath
- Date with body odour

What's your biggest dating turn-off?

Lara, how do you ever get mixed up with such trash?

I have to say men that come on too heavy and who make you feel bad when you say something...who do they think they are?!

not me, katyzzz....my friends. The biggest turned-off I've encountered is the one who was trying to scrimp (here)! <LOL>

Ooooh, yes, Tracy -- definitely! Such egos...!

Ohhh,

Egomaniacal bastards.
Guys who take every chance to talk themselves up.
Men who cannot make worthwhile conversation.
Men who take themselves too seriously.
Humourlessness.
Picking me up in a car with personalised plates.
Being over-groomed.
Running around opening car doors without making a joke of it.
Talking about ex-partners.
Stinginess.
Bad hair.

I think that will do for now...

Michaelie, I can't make decent conversation AND I take myself too seriously.

This is a good topic, because it's interesting to see what are dealbreakers for people. It can be really small things, sometimes.

For me, it's a shuddering, heaving NO:

- if a girl claims to like shopping, or tells me that shopping is her hobby. Interestingly, I've only heard girls say this in China, where, perhaps, it's a lot more acceptable to say that.

- if a girl insists on talking relentlessly about television, especially reality TV, without offering any spectacular commentary.

- if a girl likes to drink a lot, and is a totally different person when drunk, a person that she thinks is 'fun' and 'crazy'.

- if a girl talks too much without saying anything of substance.

I've also got petty dealbreakers too: the way a woman walks, her accent, her height.

Hey Cibb, then I'd be a turn-off to you because I LOVE talking about reality TV to anyone who'd listen. Lately, I've been going around asking 'Hey, do you watch So you Think You Can Dance?'

Lara, totally agree with your friends - talking too much, bad body odour and breath (come on! you'd think they would have tried!) but I would also add in being superficially romantic - going through those so-called romantic moves and overly so just because they think it's expected of them.

Aimzster - I absolutely agree about the romantic gestures too. I said about running about opening doors but really it's all of the trite bullshit that some men do without any meaning.

And - hahaha, I can just see you going about asking people about So You Think You Can Dance. You duffer. Lol.

Cibb - HOW DO YOU FIND A WOMAN WHO DOESN'T LIKE SHOPPING?!

It's a while back now - but 'plastics' are a big turn off as is anyone who's idea of a great night out is one which means asking someone else the next day how good a night they actually had.

Perpetual talkers, the 'oh there's such and such' brigade, the my s*!t don't stink crowd and the how important do I look, dress, sound - who's looking at me - maniquins.

Hmmm - just about covers it.

MNG just made me think of another one, though you get this more when you are out talking to girls - having a conversation with you but constantly looking over your shoulder to see if there's someone else more important to talk to.

If a bloke was doing that on a date I'd be off home.

And a couple more:

Smokers.
Pretentious facial hair.

Michaelie -- your comment left me <LOL>! Ewwww...personalised plates (!!!) and talking about their ex-es (worst if they start talking BAD about them!).

You sure have a tall order, Cibb! I'm curious about your gf now... Having said that, (from a female perspective) I too find some of things you mentioned annoying

OH being superficially romantic -- good point, Aimzster! Such a put-on!!

Funny
you should mention perpetual talkers, MNG. A friend was having drinks/dinner with his friend and the friend's female friend. He later told me he probably got in a handful of sentences the entire night! He was absolutely put-off even though she was attractive and very successful

You're on a roll, Michaelie! <LOL> YUCK...I totally agree about the smokers! Worst are those who do that i'm-so-cool-puffS at you OR out the corner of their mouths!!! Hope you know what I mean!? Erm...what do u mean by pretentious facial hair...??

HAHA I know what you mean... and who the hell knows what I mean by pretentious facial hair? Lol. I just know it when I see it. Two people could have the same sculpted whiskers but one will look natural and the other will look like complete tosser.

Ya know?
