WHAT to do?

Planning that first date is probably the next most difficult step – after the asking. As the *event* that’s either going to create more future dates or not, it can neither be boring nor too impressive. If it’s boring, that’ll probably be the first and last date; too impressive, that’ll probably set the bar too high for future dates…and would seem a tad unreal.
Quick coffee or drink… Most people like the casual feel of a first date, opting either for a café or a bar setting. Either options give us the time to assess our date and see if there’s potential for a longer date (the next time). A short first date allows for a quick exit if it’s not going well. If it’s going well, it just means we can look forward to the next one.
A walk… Nothing like a bit of exercise and fresh air while getting to know the date. Relaxing enough for both to have a conversation while walking, it is also pleasant enough for ghostly silence periods without it being awkward.
The art scene… A visit to an gallery or two is a casual and relaxing activity. Take in the beauty of the art, and then talk about it over casual drinks after.
Wine appreciation… A perfect way to enjoy wine, get to know your date and wines. Even if the date doesn’t work out, at least you’ve tasted good wine and are on the way to being a wine connoisseur.
Some of the best dates have been said to be simple and thoughtful ideas that were neither too expensive nor difficult to execute. A good tip I’ve heard “keep it simple and be yourself”… What do you suggest?

Another good date tip is to have a late night picnic. Eva and I had one once in front of Brisbane River. We pizzas and wine glasses filled with orange juice.
I think the most nerve wracking part about a first "date" is the first kiss. I'm friends with a lot of girls who complain about guys liking them, and sometimes, when I'm with a girl I'm interested in, I'll think "Oh man is she going to complain about me too? Do I deserve that kiss?"

Some great tips there. I reckon the gallery or the wine appreciation would be good ones - it gives you something to talk about should any awkward silences arise.
I reckon dinner dates are the scariest - nothing like sitting in a restaurant where it takes ages for the meal to arrive and struggling through the evening as you have nothing to really talk about after the initial general intro`s.

I haven't dated for a long time ... but when I did, I loved to walk and always preferred a casual cafe or wine bar, to dinner. Avoided it like the plague in fact.
Interesting post.

Some great tips. I'm a fan of the meeting for a drink or a coffee. No pressure and if things are going well, you can stay longer.
But I also like the art gallery and just a simple walk idea. And Dean's late night picnic sounds like fun.
I'll keep these in mind

Hmmm...nothing like a bit of forward-planning, huh David
Oooo...the late-night picnic sounds incredible...v. romantic
Yes, the ghostly silence at dinner would be awful, eh Ash ...especially if the food's taking a long time to be served! At least with the gallery or wine course, there are other people around...and topics to go into

Looks like most of us like a keep it simple kind of approach, huh Kylie. You're lucky, Melbourne has such great cafes...and wine bars! Sydney is so lacking in that respect...
