Waltzing around...

June 15th 2007 09:08
Waltzing dancing couple

When Pat relentlessly asked May out for a date, she deliberated for a long time on whether she should or not…not because he had a bad reputation but because he was a partner in their prestigious firm. She thought to herself, ‘Why not, he is pretty charming…and I’m not doing anything next Friday.’

That first date turned into five months – where Pat continued to wow May with weekend trips, wonderful dining experiences, and deep and meaningful conversations. May thought it was too good to be true as not only was Pat proving to be really nice, he was absolutely charming in his own quirky way.

One day while May and I were on a girls’ day out she suddenly turned sullen (after a text message from Pat). ‘What’s wrong May?’ I asked. ‘Pat’s driving me nuts! I think it’s over between us…’ she said. ‘WHhhY, I thought things were going well and you seem to really like him!’ I exclaimed.

‘Well…it all started when I told him that I’m resigning to assess what I really want to do. He got all edgy that I won’t have a steady income, but more so that self-employment wasn’t a good idea…and that it was crazy to leave such a prestigious firm.’

I was surprised and needless to say a bit shocked that Pat – who first fell for May and her carefree way – now has a change of mind and heart, all because she will soon not be a member of the corporate high-flyers. Pat never did explain how or what he felt with May…he just waltzed around it…not confronting it.

broken heart break

A couple of months later, we heard that Pat had waltzed himself into the arms of a high-flying consultant from an equally prestigious firm…!

So, was Pat afraid that he’d be burdened with taking care of May in her trying times of being self-employed? Was he embarrassed that he could no longer introduce his girlfriend as May, regional manager of Corporate High-Flyers? Was it a case of not being on equal status…or was May’s carefree way proving too much of an independence for him?
